Sentinels of true
Gresham Art Gallery, San Bernardino Valley College, 2018
This group of sculptures are informed by an interest in spiritual disciplines and the interior space one occupies at the soul level. The works reflect a way of seeing and are made in a direct association with the power of memory and spiritual thinking that comes naturally in the artist’s life and studio. The figures are designed to be symbolic of an internal journey, quietly impacting the space around them or the viewer who comes close. The figures have a rough, textured surface, inspired by natural rock and earthen formations. The usage and reference of natural materials reinforces a connection to the earth as a source of life and a place of human interaction, the setting for the beautiful and dynamic unfolding of life.
Viewers have the opportunity to engage the process of “reconnection” by joining in the natural transcendent element of the work. The sculpted figures lead viewers through various stages of contemplation from simple observation to intimate awareness of an inner space. They evoke a stillness that comes from an abiding peace within the hollow of the human soul. They reflect a way of living within the spiritual condition of the imagination that comes easily to the young at heart and to those who seek simplicity, listening for the still small voice of God.
The work projects an ancient connection of humanity's need: an internal search for meaning. It raises consciousness above the distractions of the contemporary and engages deeply with the reality of the natural and the symbolic world.
This group of sculptures specifically engages in a long inner dialogue regarding the embrace of the open space within. The quiet of a soul at rest, without the need of filling it up with life’s noise and distractions. The works explore aspects of access and enclosure, ascending and descending, open and closed, natural and shaped, as well as a contemplative silence.
The works connect to larger concerns of life, rhythms, seasons, water and earth, time and discovering a soul scape that is in gradual transformation, combining transcendence and deep thinking. The figures exist as pieces of this complex visual exploration of life and the embrace of inner stillness.
